The Dave Peck Trio

A native of the Pacific Northwest, pianist Dave Peck is known for his introspective style and lush harmonic coloring. His award winning album projects (Trio, Solo, 3 and 1, Out of Seattle, Good Road and Modern Romance) are radio and critical favorites. The Dave Peck Trio includes the brilliant Jeff Johnson on bass and the preeminent drummer, Joe La Barbera. Both rhythmic and romantic, the trio uses the standard repertoire as a framework for new composition and form. Their work is rich, intuitive, and harmonically complex with a unique and signature sound.

A native of the Pacific Northwest Dave Peck is known for his thoughtful, introspective style and rich harmonic coloring. His award winning CD’s (Trio, Solo, 3 and 1, Out of Seattle, Good Road and Modern Romance) are radio and critical favorites. He has appeared on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, Jazz After Hours, NPR’s Jazz Alive, VH1 and CBC Television. His collaboration with saxophonist Bud Shank included Tales of the Pilot Bud Shank plays the music of David Peck, Live at Jazz Alley, Tomorrow's Rainbow and The Lost Cathedral. He has performed with some of the great jazz artists of our time including Chet Baker, Joe Williams, and Freddie Hubbard. Coda Magazine calls him“…introspective and astute…lush and deeply attentive…warm, adept and perfectly subtle with enormous craft” and Downbeat Magazine says his playing is “lyrical and pastel, swinging and bluesy, with a ringing crystalline touch.”

Born In Minneapolis, Jeff Johnson left at age 20, to join Philly Joe Jones and his band. Jeff has played with a veritable who's who of great jazz musicians such as Charlie Rouse, Billy Hart, Barney Kessell, Chet Baker, Lew Tabackin, Eddie Daniels, Joanne Brackeen, Julian Priester, Bob Moses, Kenny Drew Jr., George Cables, and Hal Galper. Jeff has released 4 CD’s as leader including Free and The Art of Falling. JazzTimes says in its review of Free “Bassist Johnson is admired for his work with modern mainstream musicians…”. And Cadence Magazine says “Still, it is Johnson who captures your attention without being obvious. His bass lines are clear and distinct. He plays with a mystique that takes the music out of the ordinary with his inventive improvised lines…”. Jeff is currently on the road: playing with and leading various small ensembles; composing; and recording.

Joe La Barbera was born in Mt. Morris, New York to a musical family. He has enjoyed a long and varied career in music that has taken him all over the world with some of the finest names in jazz. In 1978 he joined Bill Evans in what was to become a landmark trio. Evans said of him “Joe is very dedicated to playing quality music and he’s a top soloist and he does the right thing at the right time”. Doug Ramsey’s Rifftides says “Joe La Barbera is one of the contemporary masters of melodic drumming.” Joe currently resides in Los Angeles and performs with his own quintet and as sidemen for Eddie Daniels, Alan Broadbent, Bill Mays, Randy Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and brother Pat La Barbera. He is on the faculty at California Institute for the Arts and is a busy clinician and guest artist at many major universities here and abroad. Joe has appeared on over 150 recordings and CD’s.
